Modernism was introduced into the mainstream culture in 1932 at the Museum of Modern Art's International Style Exhibit
curated by Henry Russell Hitchcock and Philip Johnson. This show changed the view of modernist design forever.
Albert Frey and Lawrence Kocher played an integral part,

"It is by studying the forms of nature, which have always inspired mankind,
and those of traditional architecture, which have induced beyond practical usefulness,
for theories of ideas and structure that we will discover the basic principles which guide
the creation of shape, space, and composition and be able to build a living architecture that
not only provides us with physical comfort but with spiritual joy as well."

"THE SPIRIT IN ARCHITECTURE : JOHN LAUTNER " A FILM BY BETTE COHEN

The Making of The Spirit in Architecture

"THE PURPOSE OF ARCHITECTURE IS TO IMPROVE HUMAN LIFE...

THE OVERRIDING ESSENCE IS FOUND IN THE INTANGIBLES,
LIFE, HEART, SOUL, SPIRIT, FREEDOM,
ENDURING WITHIN THE STRUCTURE."

THE SPIRIT IN ARCHITECTURE EXAMINES THE WORK OF JOHN LAUTNER , ONE OF THE MOST VISIONARY AND PROFOUND ARCHITECTS, WHO BEGAN HIS CAREER IN LOS ANGELES IN THE 1930'S. THIS ILLUMINATING JOURNEY INTO LAUTNER'S WORLD FEATURES NEVER BEFORE SEEN FOOTAGE FROM HIS APPRENTICESHIP WITH FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT AT TALIESIN; EXTENSIVE DOCUMENTATION OF HIS EXTRAORDINARY BUILDINGS; AND INTERVIEWS WITH HISTORIANS, CRITICS, COLLABORATORS, CLIENTS, AND LAUTNER HIMSELF, WHICH PUT HIS ACHIEVEMENTS IN PERSPECTIVE. HIS BUILDING'S USE IN FEATURE FILMS AND HIS "GOOGIE'S" COFFEE SHOP DESIGN DEMONSTRATE HIS CONTRIBUTION TO POPULAR CULTURE.
